She's a horrible person. There's no doubt about it. He married a wife. She should have respected that. She should be the one who is being polite and biting her tongue. Her relationship with her son is no longer a separate entity. She's completely out of touch with reality to believe she can treat her DIL like dirt and maintain a separate relationship with her son. Only a despicable woman would expect that.
Eh, I see no point in allowing yourself to be drawn in at this point OP. By your own admission, your husband is upset at the current situation. Let him handle the contact as he chooses. Support him, and let him worry about his mother. Just as a mother shouldn't expect her son to choose between her and his wife, neither should the wife ask him to choose between her and his mother.
