in case you all missed it, I did clarify what i meant by bar
(it was too late to edit my OP)
NOT:
Chili's Bar & Grill
Applebee's
Champions Sports Bar at the Hilton
a shopping mall bar like Chelsea Street Pub
an "ice house"
a tasting room
a microbrewery
a restaurant that serves beer with a playground that is obviously "family friendly"
I'm talking about an actual bar, where loud or live music is played, people are drinking, smoking (patio of course), and likely using foul language
The kind of place that doesn't open until 4 pm and stays open til 2 am
But what would I do with my Saturday afternoon if bars didn't open until 4?
If it's primarily a restaurant first, bar second -- then it's OK to bring children. Chili's, Old Chicago, Buffalo Wild Wings, Applebee's, etc.
If it's primarily a bar -- PLEASE don't bring children. There was this bar that I used to go to where the parents would bring their 8 and 10 year old daughters in every Friday night. This bar did serve food, kind of. But it was also extremely smoky (pre-smoking ban in Colorado), there were lots of rowdy biker types, the occasional heavy metal band, and people were cussing, singing dirty karaoke songs, and generally being (undignified) adults. And, no, I'm not going to clean up my act for your kid at a place for adults.
There are also places that are primarily a restaurant during the day but get very bar like at night...in which case, you might be OK to bring a kid for lunch or an early dinner, but you probably want them out of there by 8PM or so. When you see the band or karaoke DJ setting up, the poker tables coming out, big groups of adults coming in, it's time to get your check and take the kids home.
Yes, unfortunately it does happen frequently where he works. Both children and pets (mostly dogs) and since it's under guidelines of an establishment that serves beverages, both are not permitted by law.
The bar tenders have to always politely remind guests to not bring their children or pets. He said it has caused lots of arguments (especially of parents that come in already a little drunk) and he never wants to be confrontational or tell people how to parent, but to just cover his butt because it's the law...
When I tended bar, there was a paid off duty cop checking ID's at the door. No legal ID that says you are 21 or over, you weren't getting in.

I married a biker (a real biker, no longer in any club for obvious reasons). I've seen toddlers, babies, 5 year olds and pregnant women in bars (here in Fl it's legal to smoke in a bar).
I've seen babies, toddlers and 5 year olds with migraines from smoke (watery eyes, screaming, pulling their own hair, vomiting), loud bands and loud people.
I've seen babies in strollers choking on the exhaust of motorcycles because their little faces are the same height as the pipes.
I've seen babies sunburned, strapped in strollers in the sun because the bars have outside tables or "tiki bars".
I've seen babies and toddlers smacked in the head with beer bottles (not meaning to, but Mr Drunk Guy walks around with his beer bottle, which hangs right where toddler's head is).
Children do NOT belong where they can learn these habits. It's bad enough adults do it, but why not give a kid a chance to screw up his own life without adding to it?
Never mind the language they pick up (which parent wont realize until baby drops the f-bomb in front of gramma)
Depends on the bar. I took my baby... to a bar. It was no big deal.
Do you guys realize it is commonplace to take kids to pubs and the like in European countries?
We are not in Europe. I have a French sil and their 4 kids grew up in establishments that had drinking but it was a different atmosphere and attitude. It wasn't usually with loud music and food was a big part of it. I don't recall them taking them at nighttime that often, or never, really.
BTW, I heard Wanda Sykes riff on the topic of kids in bars on a talk show once. It was hilarious. I checked YouTube, but there doesn't seem to be a clip of it. You'll have to trust me. She HATES the idea.
I guess a lot of you have never been to the UK? Pub culture is very different there.
No but I have a SIL who lives there and now has grown children. It is a very different atmosphere than the typical BARS that I think are being discussed here.
That makes 2 SIL's in the European area and they would not agree that young children should be in the usual American bars.
Both have been over here to visit and we usually go to a local seafood restuarant/bar because of the freshness of the food. The children of all ages accompany us and we do drink some, with a designated driver. If it was night time and we were going to eat, drink and listen to the band, no, they would not go probably, except for maybe the very oldest kids. But they (older kids)usually babysat the younger kids for a price....lol.
