I'm one of 7 grandchildren and the youngest just passed away a few days ago. He was only 28 and didn't have any insurance. I don't have a lot of money, and was wondering what else I could do to help.
It just dawned on me today to see if there's any way I could set up some sort of quick fund to raise money for to give towards the funeral. I was thinking maybe a page online with a link to a paypal account or something. I could send an email out to all family members and friends that links to the page.
Does anyone have experience with something like this?? I literally would need to set it up today, as I'm going out of town tomorrow.
I'm so sorry to hear about this. In our area, people just write in the obituary: "In lieu of flowers, please direct contributions to the family to help with final expenses."
First, my condolences to you and your family for your loss.
I've seen people hold fundaisers such as selling barbeque plates to pay for funeral expenses. Were he or his family well-known or particularly loved in the community? If so, any event will have a better chance for success.
Also, you probably have more than 4 days. Whoever makes the funeral arrangements will probably enter into a payment agreement with the funeral home. To the extent you have any say-so, counsel whoever is doing the arrangements to not be enticed by all the stuff the funeral home will want to sell them.
A quick cremation followed by a memorial service somewhere other than the funeral home will save lots of money. A funeral with all the bells and whistles can cost $15,000 to $20,000.
I don't think there is much else you can do but list it in the obituary, and you've set up a site for donating. Just keep in mind that people are not under an obligation to give, the best you can do is just provide the info to them and whatever happens, happens.

My friend's dad had no insurance and the family had no money. They donated the body to science (free)through a local university and every year they have a mass memorial service to honour them. It's not everyone's preference but it may be an option.

This is what is done in my area, as well. You can do this and reference the fund site.
