Is it similar to having a cousin or even a sibling? I wonder if there is still a dynamic, like does the young uncle/aunt still have a certain amount of "respect" as an elder due to them, or is the relationship more just like they are "relatives"?

I don't have any nieces or nephews, but my mom has some that are less than 10-15 years younger than her and I always thought of them as being like my uncles and aunts rather than my cousins because of the enormous age gap.

My son has a niece who is 6 months older than him and one about a year younger than him. They call him Uncle but are like brother and sisters.

My parents had myself and my elder brother VERY VERY young. Their ersisters and brothers are closer to my age with one uncle who is younger than myself. They live in different stater s and while I was not real close with my younger uncle it was my dad's sister who was more like my sister. I don't have a biological sister and she was probably closer to me than if I did have one. We wrote, we visited often talked for hours and stuff. I never really saw her as my aunt.

Now my great aunts and uncles were more like my own aunt and uncles due to age.

I had freinds in high school that the niece was older by a few months than then aunt....and no, they did not treat each other like a 'typical' aunt and niece....they were friends.

My aunt was pregnant at the same time as her daughter (my cousin). The children grew up as close as siblings and didn't have a typical uncle and nephew relationship.

My father had an uncle who married and had 4 kids. When the kids were grown and with families of their own, he dumped their mother for the cleaning lady who was younger than his 4 kids! He ended up having 6 kids with the new wife.

One day, we went to visit my father's uncle and brought along the uncle's grandson who was 13. The grandson went up to the uncle's youngest kid who was 3 and said to the kid "Hi, uncle". The little kid didn't even know what he was talking about! I also pointed out to my father that those little kids were his first cousins!

I don't know how these relationships played out as all the kids got older. I do know that the 13 year old grandson disliked the idea that a 3 year old was his uncle. Of course, the strange family dynamics were no doubt a factor in all of this.

Yes. Age has nothing to do with it.
