Knowing the OP's other posts, I'd say the family did it on purpose, because they knew he wouldn't stay with them.

Nope, I'd prefer to stay in a CLEAN hotel @$100 or less per night and save my money for other activities or trips. I don't know about anyone else but I could sure think of other things to spend $600 on. Besides, when I travel for pleasure I don't stay in my hotel very much anyways.

Smart move OP!

Traveling one mile to save $200 a night? I would do that in a heartbeat, and not give it a second thought. Certainly there are cabs and shuttles that can span that short distance for minimal price and duration.

I wouldn't expect you to miss much socializing by not staying in the same hotel. If anything, they will have drinks in the bar at the end of the day and breakfast at the hotel. You can stay for the drinks, and arrange to meet them as they are finishing up with breakfast.

THE REST OF THE FAMILY complain that we are not being team players and going with what everyone else decided.

They're probably angry because you're on your way back from a trip to France and yet don't want to pony up and stay with everyone else.

Let them complain. They'll get over it or not, and you'll have $600 bucks in your pocket.

I gotta tell ya, I avoided a whole lot of trouble in my life by not caring about statements like that. As Dad used to ask in his fabulously analogical way, if all your friends were jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge, would you join them?

Have you checked the websites of those three hotels to see what price you could pay if you booked directly with them?

If Hotwire or Priceline is the problem, surely you could find more affordable lodging in a more direct way.

However, you family does not sound like the kind to care, so I think you should just book at the hotel you want and let them spend their money however they want.

It will be GOOD for you and your wife to excuse yourself from the festivities when you have had enough and go back to your own hotel, since you don't like spending time with them anyway!
