I think it's obvious when you go out to a nicer restaurant, very rarely will anyone be sitting alone, and I suspect a lot of people just don't go out to a restaurant they would like to go to just because they don't want to be seen there alone. They might not mind at all going alone, they don't want to be seen alone.

I used to be paranoid to go out and do things by myself. When I went to college I was pretty much all alone and didn't know anyone. So I started going out to eat by myself and to the movies. It was a really good confidence booster for me. Helped me to get over that solophobia I was struggling with in my life.

I only go to nicer restaurants if it is an occasion or celebration, or at least a date night. If I'm alone and I need to eat, I'll go to Chipotle, or something. It has nothing to do with being seen. It has to do with practicality, cost, time, etc.
