I'm thinking that they figure that they can be nice, friendly, and dressed up for at least one hour a week, somewhere.

People who worship a god and want badly to keep him happy so they will go to whatever good place is promised after they die are hardly likely to be anything but nice and pleasant while in the place of worship.

Try spending some time with them in their natural environments.

Many of the nicest and kindest and most genuine people I have ever met , I met in a martial arts dojo. You can find good people anywhere if you are looking or them. Contrary to popular belief there are actually a lot of good and nice people in the world and they are not all religious.

Free brunch at some one else's church. Wait - ice or no ice?

I have NEVER heard of a protestant church that serves food and coffee an hour before the service! Usually it's coffee hour afterward (and if you are an Episcopalian followed by brunch and bloodies at the golf club.)

And yet these churches seem to be all over the OP's town. Is this a denomination I am not familiar with?

I used to work in the office staff of a Lutheran church, and they held their donuts and coffee hospitality hour in between the two morning services. From what I could tell, it seemed to be fairly standard practice for churches in our area.

This happened to me. Once I joined they wanted me to do everything from single handedly run the church picnic to being on committees I wasn't interested in the same hours as a full time job, plus recruited for all kinds of things I could do for members i barely knew and pretty irate under those smiles when I backed off, not to mention guilt tactics.

I suppose they're on their best behavior for that hour or so. Many of my former neighbors, family members, ex friends and acquaintances who were faithful churchgoers were some of the most a arrogant, backstabbing, lying, cheating, awful people I've ever encountered. I avoid them like the plague.
