MIL says mattress is too firm! (feel, wife, issues)

I'm totally with you on this. I spent the weekend on an air mattress at my mother's house. I'm a large guy so it did a number on my back. I'm not gonna insist my mom spend $500 for a new bed when my overnight visits are like once every two years or so. It is enough mom put herself out to prepare the spare bedroom for me. I think your MIL is out of line and your wife ain't seeing it. If the MIL is that obsessed with it, she can open her purse and buy whatever the hell she wants to sleep on at your house.

eww, so you have multiple guests sharing the same bed at different times? I'd be more squeamish about the fact that your guests are sleeping in all the stuff that accumulates during the night, like dead skin cells on the bed.. THAT would bug me.
I vote on the mattress topper, its good for thos awful super firm mattresses the hotels always seem to have.

So, I'm curious---you don't like to stay in hotels? After all---they have multiple guests sharing the bed at different times
My adult daughter has the same problem with the firm mattress in the guest room when she visits. I've tried to alleviate her back pain with a down mattress topper, and those foam egg-crate toppers, to no avail. She told me before she arrived for this visit that she would like to pay for a new, softer mattress. Meanwhile I went to Costco and bought a gel memory foam topper but didn't mention it to her. When she woke up at my house the first morning I asked her if she would like to go mattress shopping. She said, "Actually, I slept quite comfortably." So I 'fessed up.
I think it was about $140 at Costco for a queen size. Problem solved.
From a former mattress sales person:
A memory-foam topper will add the extra layer that distinguishes many "pillow-top" mattresses these days. Just put it on there and tell her you got a "new mattress." She won't know you didn't.
If she's the kind of person who sleeps "hot" (such as menopause issues), get the kind called a GEL memory foam topper. It's a bit more expensive than foam alone, but is cooler to sleep on than just the plain memory foam so it's more comfortable for many people. Be aware that these things are heavy and need to be aired out before you put them on the bed. So don't open the box until you get it in the room where you will be using it. Once you get the package open, the topper expands in size and becomes unwieldy to carry around. If it has a bit of a smell when you get it out of the packing material, let it sit out for a day before you make the bed.
Also be aware that this will add inches to the height of your mattress (depending on the depth you buy it could be 2 to 6 inches) so you might need to get a new fitted sheet, too, if your old one was only suitable for an 11-inch mattress.
Here are some examples of reasonably priced foam/get toppers from quality manufacturers sold through Overstock.com. Read the customer reviews for real-life experience with these products; they have MANY to choose from. I like Overstock because shipping is cheap and these things are heavy. I bought one at Costco once and regretted having to take it home myself.

Really? You are that precious? People do not have different mattresses for each guest that may stay in their guest room. Not to mention...ever heard of mattress covers?
