I went out to my car to get my coat. I came back in on the first floor, going up to the fifth floor, and someone jumps in on the fourth floor, presses the first floor button, and I have to ride down then back up.

I don't think the guy knew I was going to the fifth, but does this annoy you?

I don't understand. It almost seems like you didn't press the 5th floor button. It would be impossible to go to the 1st floor before the 5th floor, if you pressed the button first.

I managed to get to the fourth floor from the first, so I obviously pressed something to put the elevator into motion.

That's impossible. The elevator goes to the first button pushed. If you got on and pushed the fifth floor first that's where it would go .

Sounds like you didn't really press the 5 button if they were able to go down on an up elevator ride.

You must have pushed the fourth floor button by accident. The elevator thought the trip had ended already.

Either that or you didn't push any button and it went to the fourth floor due to that person pushing the down button.

Irritating, but a minor issue.

I agree, I've never been in an elevator that would change direction like what the OP described.

But, I do have my own elevator irritation... I work in a large office building that is almost entirely occupied by the same company. As a result, people are often going to different floors to see people in other departments. Yet, nearly every time the elevator stops and I want to get off, there are people swarming around the door that appear surprised that someone would be getting off the elevator. It doesn't matter if I'm getting out on the first floor, the tenth floor of the 21st floor.

How do they not realize that there might be someone getting off the elevator? They seriously crowd the doors so much that it's often hard to get out! I find it very annoying and odd.

I also cannot stand it when people get in the elevator to go up or down a single floor. Come on... that's what the stairs are for! If I'm going less than 5 floors I use the stairs.

Not necessarily. He could have accessed the elevator from his floor.

I agree with this, although this can happen anywhere! Have you ever been on the subway!? They all crowd the doors to get on while the people getting off have to fight to get through.

In my office, we use a key card to access our floor and most likely the light never stays lit. Just recently it's started skipping my floor all together and going back down to "1" forcing me to use my keycard again and have to go all the way back up to "29". Very annoying.
