Because I feel funny when I say it and never hear it unless it's an old movie or a sitcom taking place prior to 1970, such as I Love Lucy.

So when meeting people for the first time, what do you say or personally prefer?

PS For casual intro's I use "howdy".

I never said "how do you do"; a simple "How are you?" or "How's it goin'?" works for me.

If someone said "how do you do" to me, I would probably come back with "How do I do... what?"

Hi, nice to meet you works for me. I don't think I've ever said how do you do, and I'm old enough to have seen I Love Lucy during its original run.

I remember I was learning that from my class teacher but never used that practically, " hi how are you" was always used.

I haven't heard that in real life either. It is very formal sounding. I usually say nice to meet you.

I also have never in my 40+ years heard it used in a serious conversation. I guess if the OP was accustomed to it as a part of regular society for a while that it must have been a local dialect type thing.
