How do you handle people who consider you a close friend after only a short time? It happens quite often and I don't want to hurt feelings but for me to feel close takes years not a few months. I have maybe 1-2 people I consider "close friends" the rest are just casual friends in my mind. I usually just let them think what they think. Does this happen to anyone else? I get told I'm a good listener maybe thats it?
I take it as a compliment. I know a couple of people who call me their "best friend", I just don't hold them in the same regard. I like them a lot, but "best"? Not quite. I'm still honored they think of me that way.
Honestly, I hate the term "best friend". It sounds as though it should have been left behind in middle school.
I just realized I responded incorrectly. Close friend isn't the same thing as best friend. But, still, I would take it as a compliment.
I actually have a hard time handling people like that. For me, it's not so much that they think we are best friends, but it just feels like they want to spend way more time with me than I want to spend with them. It gets awkward for me when someone I saw yesterday wants to see me again today - I'm usually good with once a week, at most, for any of my friends.
These people are superficial. Just limit your time with them to the amount you feel comfortable.
One of my friend (real one) told me once " I ran into X and she mentioned that you were her best friend. I have to be honest, I just can't see it." I laughed and told her that the next time she saw X, to ask X if I was married and how many kids I had, if any. She did - and X had no idea. That "friendship" was really all about her. You are the mirror.
