Before yesterday's mid-term election, I posted my political affiliation of Facebook in a "Get out and vote" type post. Yesterday, a woman I considered my oldest friend (we've been friends for 40 years!) posted a little meme slamming my political party, so I replied with a post stating I'm proud of my political party. Because of this, she unfriended and blocked me!!! Facebook is my only contact with her, as we live several hours apart, so it's clear she has shut me out of her life, purely because of my political views. I feel she is at fault for posting what she did, knowing it was my party she was putting down. I know it doesn't matter whose fault it is, but I'm very sorry about losing her friendship and saying goodbye to our long history together. Has anything like this ever happened to any one else here?

Facebook drama... and not much of a friendship.

You actually started it by posting your party choice. Then so what if she countered with "a little meme"? You should have let it go.

One thing I don't get....
How are you friends with someone for 40 years and they don't already know your political leanings?

This has happened to my husband. I didn't worry over his on-line opinions regarding religion AND politics until it started affecting relationships with neighbors (and a few family). It is now my feeling that some things are best left unsaid in conversations on line and maybe even everyday convos. These would be: Sex, Money, Politics and Religion.

Well, not losing friends....does it count dragging my boyfriend out of a bar?
(Or the bartender, our friend, would have...)
Or putting my hands on his chest with a friend of mine?

If she did all of that over politics she has not been a friend for 40 years she has been an acquaintance.
The thing is she didn't do much more than what you did in reality. You posted your political party for all to see, she commented on it and you replied to said comment.

If you had made your post an actual "Don't forget to go and vote today" instead of "Don't forget to go out and vote for Joe Whatshisname" your post would have been generic not specific.

this is why I shy away from talking about politics. It can get heated and arguments follow. Best to keep it to yourself or discuss with someone who has similiar views. I posted nothing yesterday anything of political nature and never do

Only a self-important idiot severs a long-standing friendship due to their political beliefs. Consider yourself fortunate that you're rid of this ninny.

Close friends for over 40 years, yet your only contact was through Facebook? If anything, this sounds like an acquaintance and nothing more. There are two things in life that can cause instant arguments and that is politics and religion.

Yes to all of the above. When we moved from a liberal state to a conservative one, I had to dodge all the political and religious talk. But, if you say this often enough, "I like you, but we don't agree on everything, so let's leave those subjects off the table", you can keep your friends and principles too. And, if you don't? Well that's completely on the other party.

Agreed. Close friends do things together and keep in touch outside of FB. Thats just my opinion
