Why is the site constantly trying to give you the option to add more and more friends? I tried to create a alternate FB account because I wanted to join some groups that my family and friends don't need to know about. Then all of a sudden I got a message saying "I must confirm my identity"??

Once I did that and added my cell number, I started seeing people I may know which is the people who are friends on my other FB account. And since I saw them, I'm sure they may see the same thing on their page and would then find out I have another FB account. So I just decided to delete it.

FB is a great site but very annoying at times

Perhaps city data needs a FB subforum?

Well, it's a social networking site, and they are trying to encourage ... wait for it ... networking.

Alternate accounts are frowned upon (well, technically they're against the TOS), so I wouldn't expect them to make it an easy or pleasant experience to have two accounts.

Well I wanted to join some ADULT facebook groups and didn't want to do it with my primary account so I figured I would create another one. But I see that didn't work out at all

There's already an Internet forum in the Science & Technology section:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/internet/

This imo is where queries of this nature belong.

What is wrong with doing that? Can Facebook figure out that the two accounts belong to the same real person? I have a couple of friends with regular (actually family-oriented) accounts and adult (VERY adult) accounts and they've never said anything about crosstalk.

Facebook absolutely knows when accounts are from the same ISP. That's not a violation of their TOS and whether or not it's a problem is up to you.
