DO you get the same thrill from paper maps that you do from electronic ones? It could be you are addicted to the screen time more than the data itself.....

Spending hours looking at maps is not a problem. Spending hours using Google earth to see what the neighbors have in their backyards is a problem.

Not that I'd know anything about that.

Oh! I'm really astonished. I wouldn't expect my thread what I mentioned about maps.. Actually that's not a problem looking at maps or using maps and designing maps, amateurishly.. It's an intellectual activity so I think.. You know that most of people have no essential knowledge about the geography of world or about their countries. weird! Anyway guys thanks a lot for your comments and advises.

thanks.
Are you getting in trouble at work or with your spouse, or letting homework slide because of it?

I collect antique atlases and geography books, so I am familiar with the allure of maps.

Maps are magical. They are like little Sears Catalogs of the world.

Google Earth is my favorite program of all time.

When I was a kid we often spent a few weeks at my aunt's cabin in eastern Norway. Since days were totally unstructured, I would take out the map of the area which had a multitude of dirt logging roads, foot paths, goat trail, hills, ridges, and little lakes. I would transcribe my own maps on how to get to a particular lake or hilltop and then spend the rest of the day navigating towards my goal on my own copy. My uncle thought I was weird to not just take the map.

I also really got into orienteering in my late childhood/early teen years as there was a pretty active orienteering scene in New York at that time. Now with GPS phones I fear that hobby has shrunk quite a bit. I always liked the challenge of map and compass, though.
