It would be pretty hard for the OP to say it's unhygienic since they originally belonged to the MIL and then the OP wore them after the MIL.
And even if it were a concern, earrings can be cleaned.
I missed the part where they were hers, first. Oops. And yes, I know. Soaking in alcohol will disinfect.
But I still would have embarrassed her. That's just some cheap, tacky behavior there. I probably wouldn't accept anything from her in the future, either. I can't stand behavior like that, in-laws or no.

I have a feeling that the earrings in question are only a small part of a larger issue.
Push comes to shove, a man should side with his wife, just like a woman should side with her husband were the situation reversed. Cleave unto and all of that happy hooey.
My guess is that the larger issue is a power struggle of some sort. Mommy Dearest is feeling left out and wants attention and to exert some kind of dominance. All the more reason for Hub to step in and be like, "Mom, come on. That's tacky."
A piece of work to be sure. Sadly we have no control over the families that we are born into and just some control over the ones we marry into. It's best handled in the way that you did, adult, and low drama. I agree though with the quoted comment below.
