I received an engraved pen as a gift when I graduated HS. I still have it some where but I think I only used it once or twice. Not my favorite gift.
I agree with getting him something engraved, but maybe not a pen. Maybe a nice watch?
I used the engraved pen that received after graduate school for years. It is the type of thing that someone uses a lot more on a professional job than as a college student.
OP, maybe your brother would use it a lot or maybe not. You know his tastes better than we do. Your friend was wrong to call it a "stupid" gift.
Who doesn't use a pen? I can't think of a day that I didn't have to use one.
It might be helpful to know what your brother has majored in and what type of job he will be doing in the future. Maybe something related to his future career might be nice.
I'm not saying a pen is a bad idea...it wouldn't be be my choice to give or receive. As I've gotten older, I enjoy experiences more than stuff. (I've heard that's the trend with millennial too.)
Have you considered an outing with you brother? Camping, rafting, fishing, hiking, or some other activity?
My brother is 22 and is majoring in the Criminology field. He is going to become a cop. He isn't interested in pocket knives or money clips - i know that much. He loves soccer too. Maybe a signed jersey but that would be too expensive i think

The pen sounds like a great idea then because he'll probably use it a lot in his work! Very thoughtful of you!
