Society really should stop enabling that behavior, no wonder so many women are immature. It's like, yeah we get it, you're mad your expiration date is fast approaching. Welcome to Earth.

It is not the least bit subtle, and that's why they ask for the sign, because Asians (not just Chinese) tend to be very nosy about these things, even as adults. When they become doctors (as many do), it's appropriate to ask someone's age, otherwise, MYOB!
Been there, done that. Know all their sneaky tricks very well.
Or maybe it's just to ask questions to ask. One fellow I dated, who was 6'3", did the best impression of a Japanese tourist in Manhattan I've ever heard in my life. He said they'd be standing near him on a line or something, look up at him like he was some strange and fascinating new species, and say, "Oh. Why you so tall?" They'd even want to take a picture of him!
It's a way to convey that she is not comfortable sharing this information. You have heard the age old rule-never ask a woman her age. Just don't ask about her age but don't hold that against her.
Oh yeah it's just a woman thing. Meanwhile I've dated three--count em, THREE, guys who have lied about their age.
Men are even more vain about it than women.
Could be true. I have encountered guys who would "rather not say" their age and it's weird because guys being coy about their age is weird. I don't know the basis for those guys lying, but it's not seen as generally inappropriate to ask a guy his age.
