Barring a crime or possibility of a crime, I never step in for it never goes well. People simply don't like being called out on their behavior, and they will end up causing drama for you thereafter. If it's bad it's a valid reasons for distancing yourself.

I knew a couple in college that had been together for like 5 years but when they started their long, turbulent breakup, it was seen by all on fb. They would say passive aggressive things about each other "you'd think someone who's supposedly been in love with you for x years could help you move, I guess not!" and trash like that. It got so annoying. Seriously, they were acting like I would expect 13 year olds to act on social media about a breakup.

So one day we were all at a pool party, and through party conversation the issue of the couple airing their disputes publicly came up. I told the girl (so only her and maybe one or two of her good friends could hear) that the public arguing wasn't good for anybody and she interrupted with "How about you mind your own damn business?" and so I said "If it's not my business, why do you announce it to hundreds of people every day? Am I the one of your hundreds of friends that wasn't supposed to see those posts?"

I'll never forget the way her mouth popped open but nothing came out, and she just kind of looked down with stunned eyes. I'm pretty sure her friends had told her the same things I did and she was humiliated to hear someone else tell her in front of them.

After a short, awkward silence, there was some quiet chuckling and "oooooh, burn" type noises... That was nice to be reassured, but the girl had no choice but to leave. We haven't been cool since then and that whole ordeal between them may have been the main catalyst for deleting my fb account two years ago... Glad it happened.
