This is a very small peeve, about the size of a potato chip, but I was at the pharmacy this morning. There wasn't anyone waiting in line, so I stepped up to the "Please wait here" sign.
There was, however, a chattering biddy seated near by, yakking on her cellphone. You know the type: She wants everyone to hear her end of the conversation because she's soooo busy and soooo important. I'm used to this rudeness, so I blocked out the sound of her voice.
Until I hear her say, "Excuse me! Excuse me! I'm in line ahead of you!"
I turned around and said, "No, you were sitting there talking on the phone."
"But I was here first!"
Considering the possibility the witch had a mobility issue that prevented her from standing for more than a minute, I relented and let her go ahead of me.
I watched her at the window and realized no, she's perfectly able to walk, stand, wait in line...
Now I feel like an idiot for letting her get away with it. What would you have done?
#1 (Tempting) let her go first, trip her as she passes....
#2. Walk over to her, grab phone and smash it and say "Now, you can go first"
#3. Let her go first, rolleyes, emit loud sighs and under breath say unintelligible things while looking at her in furious anger.
#4. Let the $%^&* go first, some people were born to be jerks.
Because I'm old and sometimes (sometimes?) cranky and/or grumpy I say no and get prepared to give a litany of expletives if the non-conversation continues. Having said that macho line, I remember the last time it happened and I said nothing. I mumbled to myself all the way home wondering what kind of stupid attack I just had. Got home and my dog (aka Pooch) out of the clear blue jumped up and gave me a kiss right in the mouth. Knowing which part of her anatomy she enjoys a lot, I spent the next several minutes in the bathroom with soap and water. I'd forgotten about that episode until I saw the title of this topic. Now I am grumpy again.

Nope, she relinquished her place. Obviously the phone call was more important to her. She can wait. And will. My good karma doesn't reach that far to rude people.
On the other time, if I have more than 12 items in a grocery store, I will always invite a person with only a few behind me to go ahead. People appreciate that a lot.
I don't have much tolerance for rude and entitled people. Unless I was in a really good mood (which is rare these days), I would have told her "Too bad" and then asked her how she expects anyone to know she's in line if she's not in line but sitting in a chair. Why wouldn't everyone sit down while they're waiting in line then?
Ask nicely? Maybe. Demand? No. Rude behavior continues because people reward it.
This.
But no, too many people are concerned with what that stranger will think of them and getting points on their Heaven admission card. The common answer you'll get will be 'I'd Be Passive And Be Sure To Kiss Her Ass As Well To Make Her Like Me.'
Had it been me standing there she would've thought twice and took her place behind me in line, as I suffer no fools in public.
EDIT: I just noticed another Caldwell in the thread...no relation, I'm named after the 'What You Won't Do For Love' guy.
Well, we could ask them if they failed kindergarten. That is where most people are supposed to learn not to be a "me first."
Now when it comes to driving, I am learning it is much safer to let them go ahead. Cars are really big weapons and if someone wrecks you it will take both of you longer to get home.
If you are looking for a reason not to let them in front just say, "I would but I have something baking in the oven at home and have to get back before it burns."
