this is a great post, thank you for including this view, it is spot on and very relevant
my ex had this happen in his family, one of the cousins had a kid who just got in more and more trouble, and all the uncles were trying to help him, and then he started stealing from the uncles, the grandparents, kicked out of high school. Finally when one of the uncles caught him stealing tools from his metal shop, he gave the kid a choice. He had the phone in one hand and his truck keys in the other, and said either i call the cops and have you arrested for stealing and you will go to jail and no one in the family will bail you out; or you join the military, and i drive you down to the recruiting center right now and you sign up. The family had talked about this and they were all in agreement. The kid didn't want to go to jail so he joined the military. The family was hoping it would straighten him out and he could learn some useful skills and discipline. He lasted less than 2 years and was kicked out of the military, and that was that, he went back to criminal activity and last we heard he was incarcerated.
Yes, you can't help some people. My cousin did time in jail, got out and after a while just disappeared. No one has heard from him in decades. I can't imagine what that feels like to have to give up, but its unfair to have other people living in the house afraid of a family member.
just because he was arrested doesn't mean he was guilty.
he is guilty of criminal activity, because he was in possession of illegal drugs that are illegal in the state he lived in. the opening post clearly states he had pot in his bedroom. that is the illegal criminal activity he is guilty of.

That was not the criminal activity for which he sat in jail 4 months.
Thank heavens that our justice system, while imperfect, doesn't work this way!
I can see making him stay in a jail for a couple of days - but he was almost certainly raped and brutalized in Rikers Island. He will have psychological problems for the rest of his life.

And you know that... how?
