Since his comment was made through a computer screen, it was hard to tell if he was being serious or just joking. I don't find self-harm jokes funny at all. My friend told me that he was going to take an extreme hot shower. His response when I expressed my concern was "Do you really think I'd do that". And then said, I don't know. That was the end of the conversation.
The sad thing people can put on a really good front like nothing is wrong such as in Robin Williams' case so never can be so sure when people make comments like that.

You seem to be way too involved in other people's lives.
No offense, but you have the weirdest threads. My advice is to either find new people to hang out with or work on yourself. The issues you seem to have with people around you (or is it just one person?) are all kinda odd.

A desire to take an extremely hot shower. I like my showers extremely hot. It doesn't mean I'm harming myself.
If he said "I'm going to take a shower hot enough to give myself third degree burns," then that might be concerning.
