Level of personal interaction. A friend is some one who you would have dinner with or you could ask to help you move. An acquaintance is some one you may have met once or twice at a party.

Asking a friend to help you move is a sure way to have that person turn into an acquaintance. Same with asking for a ride to the airport.
Some acquaintances I have known for years and see them regularly. Some friends I don't see that often anymore but they mean more to me.
A friend is someone you speak to fairly often. They know what's going on in your life and you know what's going on in theirs. You can trust them and confide in them. You can call up and ask for a favor.
An acquaintance is someone you may have met one or twice, but you really don't know much about them and you're not on a personal level with them. You probably don't know where they live or even their phone number, but if you see them at the store you'll say hi.
We talked about this in college due to people overusing the word "acquaintance"...
In that context, a friend is someone you'll contact to hang out with and do whatever (video games, party, get coffee, watch TV)
an acquaintance is someone you only see through other people (making them a potential friend by default) OR you only contact them on your own for work/school stuff.
Basically, an acquaintance is someone you know and might talk to somewhat often, but only as a result of the arena (work/school) that facilitates your interactions.
So in the context of what started our conversation, an acquaintance is someone you talk to fairly often and you have class with or work with them. Now take away the environment that brought you together in the first place - would you still spend time with each other? If yes, you're friends.
A friend is someone who can see you laid bare, the door to your heart and mind completely open, and will then love you regardless. There is no judgment. No ulterior motives. There is freedom to be who you are.
