In my life happenstance, a simple gesture of a hug, or genuine prayer has alleviated some of the discontent.
I deeply disdain disingenuous comments of "cheer up! It will get better"! Its patronizing and dismiss's the persons true circumstance.
I recently had a person (quite gleefully) say "Ohh do have a Merry Christmas!" after telling me that the job that I had accepted to start was being rescinded. Rather a backhanded slap in my world. My livlihood and skills deserved a more respecting approach.

Yeah I lost my job a week before Xmas ( it happens in construction with lay offs but it's a big no no just before Xmas )... Basically they did a legal fiddle and I got conned out of my holiday pay, benefits etc.
He said " No hard feelings? .... Have a nice Xmas "!!!!!.... I'm a nice bloke but exploded over the phone and would have half killed him if he was in front of me!
It's shocking so naturally I can sympathise with you on that mate

I really understand what you mean about being disingenuous; it sounds so distant and cold being the recipient of a comment like that.
A little late, but I sent a recent note saying,"I hope you find warm moments and warm memories during this time. Sending you healing energy along with my love and prayers. May the peace of the season be with you. Best wishes."
This was to a family member grieving the death of a beloved parent in November for whom she had been caregiver. We have been in touch, so I didn't need to say a lot. Sent a similar sentiment to a co-worker with a recent, not hopeful diagnosis. Always hard to find words that feel right, but so important to let people know that they are cared for.
It depends on how often you see the person. If someone you won't see until the new year rolls around, I just say "This season was hard for you. Hoping you have a nice 2017".
If I'm not sure if someone celebrates Christmas or not, I just say "happy holidays."
Ugh.
