If someone asks me a question while I have food in my mouth, I put my finger up to signal "wait", swallow my food, and then answer them. One of my pet peeves is people who talk with their mouth full and make all kinds of smacking and other sounds while eating. Add to that commercials where they have people do that as though it were cute.

I hate it! The sound is a trigger sound to me as I have misophonia. I literally can't eat in the same room as some people. It was one of the things that ruined my last relationship.

That is a classy way to handle it, should work fine with any reasonable person.

It makes me think their Momma didn't raise them up right.

When I was dating a first date with someone usually was or included a meal. I wanted to see if they had proper table manners before spending any more time with them. That may have been a snob value but it worked just fine for me.
