Once a young woman who lived above me had something very heavy delivered. She couldn't carry it up herself, so I did it. When I took it into her bedroom, there were large, plate-glass mirrors on three sides of the bed and also on the ceiling. She had a boyfriend named Bill who would come and stay with her for a week at a time and frequently, plaster-dust would shake out of small cracks in the ceiling. But then he'd leave and camp out in the woods for two weeks, before returning. I guess it took him that long to recover.

About 10 years ago these little toddler kid mannequins about 3 foot tall became popular. People had them in their dens, etc. They were dressed in regular toddler clothes, a cap, and stood bent over with theirs arms folded in front of them, heads buried. They were usually facing whatever they were leaning against, so you'd see them from the back when you walked into the room. Looked so real and SO creepy. Glad that fad passed.

Waked?
I think animalcrazy meant that they held the wake for her husband's deceased gmother in the house. Not that she woke up there - although it caught my attention, too, and I had to think about it for a moment.

That cannot have been a real fad! You must be making it up.

Let's see... my ex used to go to people's homes and apartments for health care visits, and he told me once that one of his patients had a life-size statue of Jesus in the kitchen, standing next to the table.

One time i went to a christmas party to a house where the people's beloved dog just died. So they had the dog's ashes in an urn in the living room. then over by the fireplace, they had a statue of Mary like you see in cemetaries (about 3 feet high). and what looked like a headstone next to it. now this was on Christmas. Very much like a funeral or something. Very creepy. So they were passing the urn with the ashes around to each of us, and when it came time for me to hold it, i said NO THANK YOU. i didn't even want to touch it.

I stayed at a friend's house for the weekend when I was 11. The house was a total mess. There was a used maxi pad on the stairs.

It's real. I remember them all over the place. Usually they were a wood base (not like a plastic mannequin you see in stores), and either had painted clothes (for those used as lawn ornaments) or dressed in real clothes (for the inside ones). I hated those damn things, but it seemed like every other person had them in the Midwest during the 90s.

I tried finding a picture of one, but couldn't. You would find them at every craft fair. Ugh!
