Yeah. I'll donate for emergency type things, if I know the parties involved.
Yeah, I recently donated to a couple I know after the husband had a medical emergency and passed out behind the wheel of his car and drove into a ditch. Their car was totaled and he broke his legs and had to be helicoptered out. They're nice people and their expenses are huge beyond what insurance covers.
Someone else I know set up a fund so she can go to a concert in another city. That one I passed on.
Seriously, you think one outlandish example proves your point?
I think this absolutely proves the point.
Some people do not understand what it means to save. They live paycheck to paycheck with all the newest gaming devices and phones, but can't get their car fixed when it breaks down.
There have been threads about this before an it's absolutely ridiculous! I have given to a few and I think some Gofundme's are good, such as for a family who had a member in a bad car accident and needs help with bills, help with funeral expenses, help with someone with cancer who is struggling with the bills, etc. What I don't like is people asking for money for things that are not necessary like weddings, trips, adoption, etc.
People can set up these ridiculous "so called" charities, but no one needs to donate to them.
I need some major home repairs and was tempted to start a "go fund me" awhile back. I didn't though because I did not know how it would be perceived, but I still need those repairs. (leaking roof, broken asbestos tiles falling off house, etc)
I have donated to a young woman I knew who was hiking the Pacific Coast Trail. Her mother was my best friend and died of cancer at 55. The young woman was someone I would happily have had as a daughter.
I have bought special marking pens for a friend going on a coast to coast bike ride so she could have everyone sign fabric strips to make a memory quilt on her return.
Otherwise, I funded an Xray machine for a local spay neuter clinic and we support several local well run charities that we work with. But I would not give to gofundme or other begging campaigns.
Fortunately we have never been approached by something like this. Us and everyone we know does not partake in anything we cannot afford to pay for ourselves. We have also paid all of our medical debts that insurance did not cover without financial help from anyone, nor would we even think to ask for help. Between Mr. CSD's broken arm and 3 surgeries and my stroke and rehabilitation we have had more close to $100,000.00 in medical cost which does not include all of the medication I still take daily.
Thankfully I haven't seen many frivolous Go Fund Me requests. I would roll my eyes at those types of things. I would however donate to someone I know if they had an unexpected emergency situation like unexpected major medical costs or a death.
