I've known a couple.

Notably, my grandmother. She was raped as a teenager and my father was the result. She never kissed a man in her life and died in her 80s.

Her immediate family was dead and her other relatives disowned her because she was a knocked up *****. (the 1930s)

(technically she didn't live alone, she raised my father and he left for college at 17, but still).

What a horrible story! And yet....here you are, due to it. This sounds like a book in the making. Very much credit to her for struggling to raise your father alone, in that era when you got shunned for it. Sobering.

I am so sorry she could never get over what was done to her....

I know 2 sisters, one of them definitely fits the bill. The older of the 2 never was in a relationship in her life. The younger one did date and had a few brief relationships. Neither of them married---neither did their brother. The sisters are now in their early 60s and live together.

One of my college roommates would go out on dates --- reluctantly. She was cute and vivacious so lots of guys were attracted to her. She rarely was interested and after one date---for the most part---that was it. She had a boyfriend for a while but broke up with him because she had a dream that he was hugging her so tightly that he broke her ribs---yikes!

She never married and had her mother living with her for almost 20 years. Her mother recently died so now she lives alone. Neither of her 2 brothers married either, although one was in a long term relationship years ago.

Yes.
My cousin states no woman would want him bc of his vitiligo, so he never bothered. I think that's total crap and cowardice talking. He never gave anyone a chance. He just rejected them before they could reject him. He's in his late 40s.

I have another friend who had a live-in boyfriend who isn't really worth speaking about. Because he was there to use her money. He made her pay all the bills and buy him new cars every time he wrecked them in DUIs. Meanwhile he just played video games and drank and did drugs. She finally kicked him out. Has never been with anyone before or since. She's 42 years old.

I have another friend who is 43 and a lesbian and I don't think that she's ever managed to get involved in a relationship. I don't really know why. She's a nice smart girl. I know she wants a physical and intimate relationship. I'm not sure why it's never happened for her.

Anyway, I can think of a few more people.

My son is 37 an has never had a long term partner or girlfriend. He isn't gay, he just does not want a typical marriage type set-up.

It's his life and I respect his choices.

C.S.Lewis wrote of the dangers of isolation.
The only place that is safe from emotional pain is hell.
To lock ones heart away in a box, safe from danger,
but there in the dark it become brittle.

He was quite right.

I have 2 relatives, sisters, that have never been in a romantic relationship with anybody. But they don't live alone, they live together. They also have had careers, and friends. They seem quite content with their solo statuses.

We also have a few men who come into work every day, and hang out. They will just sit down and stay for hours, trying to make conversation with everybody who works there. Their loneliness is apparent, but we're a business, not a social club.

Yes a friend of mine bought her own condo when she was in her late twenties and is now in her fifties. She has lived alone all this time never having a relationship. She's very happy with her life and one of the most well-adjusted people I know.

I know many woman like this. They are all smart, independent and fairly well adjusted people. Probably one or two had a difficult upbringing with difficult parents, which may have had an impact. Not so for the others.

One finally decided to have a baby on her own at the age of 45(!) and is doing really well. So I guess she isn't living alone any longer
