I already said I would live with my friends and move in but one of them is super shady plus I like my own space.

Anyways I guess this would mean i'm going back on what I told them which is probably what would make them upset.

How do I tell them I don't want to live with them? What is the best way?

I don't want to lose friends over this.

"You're probably going to be angry, and I don't blame you, but after giving this more thought, I've decided that I'm not going to move in."

No need to explain. Just keep repeating above. Leave if you have to. No need for arguments.

Sometimes we change our mind.

No big deal.

If you lose a friend over this, it's not much of a friendship.

Trust yourself, and do what you think is best.

Good luck.

I feel like they still will be all pissed off. This is because I said sure why not i'm down.

To me it sounds great on paper, but the truth is one of them is SO SHADY and irresponsible that I have huge doubts that he will pay rent.

The contract would make us all responsible so I would go broke and be poor if I tacked on another 300 dollars or more to my rent bill for this shady friend.

He is a great friend but he has a lot of personal issues and has a bad track record. This guy will like disappear for a month at a time and no one will know where he goes but when he does he just doesn't care to pay any bills or do anything besides abuse substances, then lie about it.

You're very wise not to get into this situation with a shady, irresponsible guy. As others have said, just tell them you've reconsidered and can't do it. They will probably be ticked off initially, but they will get over it. If they've got any sense at all they have to know rooming with this flaky guy is not prudent.

It would help if we knew what your living arrangements are....I think if you live at home now...make something up about having to help your folks out with a bit of rent.

But, like others have said, if they get mad, they aren't good enough anyway. The one shady guy might get mad because he was counting on you to support him.
Just make up whatever applies, or be honest....you just aren't into it anymore.

I'd say "I'm sorry, but I'm afraid our friendship would suffer if we were roommates, and I want to keep our friendship."

So upset them. Life goes on. Surely you've upset people and been upset yourself.

This is what I would say....
"I am sorry. I will not be able to move in with you like I said I would."

You owe no explanations. However, if you need some.....work with these...you like your own space, one of the roommates is shady, irresponsible and on drugs (and/or alcohol)...and you don't want to risk going broke in case he doesn't make rent payment.
They are honest answers of how you feel. Unless you signed a contract there should be no issue. If you lose a friend over it, that would be a real shame. However, would you rather be broke?

I don't have many friends left so if I lose these ones that is it. All of my other ones left the state I am in and some even left the country i am in.
