A few years ago my husband and I were vacationing in another state about 1000 miles away. We were staying at a small resort/hotel. We had just paid our bar bill and were literally seconds away from going back to our room to get ready for dinner. Husband turned around and saw someone he previously worked with for 10 years and the spouse. We had become friends over the years. They weren't staying there, but they decided to walk through to check it out. My husband noticed them first. My reaction cannot be repeated here. 30-60 seconds later and we never would have seen them even though they were staying at the hotel next to ours.
Stepped off a water taxi from the airport in Venice. Heard someone yell out my name. I ignored it at first - because what are the odds? Yeah, someone I knew was also in Venice.
OK, here's a weird one. I went to Ohio State and would go drinking at a particular bar on the weekends with friends. There was this one guy who wasn't a part of our group who I would see there all the time. After a while we would acknowledge each other with a nod or a "Hey", but never really spoke to each other. Fast forward, I moved to Los Angeles when I was 24. I was at a club one night and needed to use the men's room. The place was crowded as was the john. Standing there shoulder to shoulder, I glance over and THERE'S THE SAME GUY! I just said "Hey" out of habit and he replied with a "Hey". Then in unison, we both yelled "What the f*&% are YOU doing here?" It was hilarious. Never saw him again after that.
It wasn't exactly someone I knew, but I flew from NJ to FL to attend my sister-in-law's wedding. The reception was at a hotel. Toward the end of the night I noticed a guy off to the side who appeared to be in charge of the catering that night, and I told him they had done a nice job. He asked if I lived in the area, and I said no, I was from a small town in NJ that he probably never heard of. It turned out he was not only from my town, but his mother had been my fourth-grade teacher, and he graduated from high school with one of my older sisters.
Just today, I was talking to somebody who had been assigned community service hours at the non-profit I work for. Her accent was familiar, we talked. We are from the same small town in NJ (MQ!) and my maid-of-honor was her babysitter. And we are now both living 1200 miles away from that town.

Uh, oh, Mattie...
The world is strange. Last Friday I had to go to LabCorp to get blood drawn. In the waiting room was a woman with whom I worked at the WTC more than 26 years ago. I had not seen her since she went on maternity leave in 1990, and she was married to another coworker, who died on 9/11. We exchanged numbers and FB info. It was good to reconnect.
That's funny, I ran into an old boyfriend in a crowded art museum in New York City.....which was 1200 miles from where we both had lived when we were together.

Well, one time my GF and I went to a nudist resort about 200 miles from home, and we ran into a couple we know from our home town. We never knew they were nudists, and it was kind of a sheepish encounter.
My GF said "Well, THAT was strange !"
