I was with some friends in NYC. We were in a very crowded subway station (Union Square). My friend looked over to our left and said, "What a cute baby!" I looked over and it was my nephew! I would not have been able to identify him since he just looked like many other babies at that point, but when I realized the woman who was holding him was my sister-in-law, it all clicked.
It wasn't THAT weird to see them in that station since they live in Union Square, however, it was quite a coincidence that we ended up standing next to them waiting for the same train.
30 years ago, I was at a base of Mt. Nanga Parbat (nicknamed Killer Mountain) at the Rupal face, where the mountain goes almost straight up for 15,000 feet. I ran into someone with whom I went to college. Small world!
We live on the east coast but we were touring California. Inside the mission in San Juan Capistrano we ran into a family from our small east coast town. Their son was in my son's class, 3rd grade.
A few months after my divorce, I was having dinner at a downtown restaurant with the man who would become Husband #2. Just after we ordered our dessert and coffee, a solo male diner was seated at the next table. It was Husband #1! Very awkward.
The next day #1 (who was only about 5'6") calls me to say, "I know why you left me. It's because he's tall!"
Husband #2 (who is bald), was moping, too, for another reason - because #1 still had all his hair.
I didn't really "run into" her.....as it could've been painful.....but I went to my old hometown for Christmas last year.
On my way to the airport to go "home" 2000 miles away, I decided to stop at my father's grave site for a bit. Buried right next to him was the mother of one of my old girlfriends.
At a flea market in another state away from home. And one time I was a training in another city and a lady came up to me and asked me about my surname and by the end of the conference we'd figured out we were 4th cousins once removed but didn't know anyone in common.
At the Steelers bar in Rome. Started chatting with a young lady who had gone to high school with my oldest son. Her younger sister (not there) was dating my younger sons best friend.
I went to high school 1200 miles from where I live now and 25 years ago. One of my HS friends apparently moved to this same city. I found out when I ran into her at a party one of my co-workers was hosting. Turns out she not only moved to the same city, she married my co-worker's bother.
I was in Belize for my wedding/honeymoon and I ran into a co-worker in a souvenir shop on a tiny island thousands of miles from our home in California. Neither of us knew the other was visiting Belize.
