She's not gonna live forever. Better be nice, you don't want her to die after you yelled at her for being mean. I wish I had a grandmother. Mine all died when I was a kid. Show some respect, even if she is nasty.

Op, your grandmother is to old and not in her right mind to change now and sounds like she had a hard unhappy life before. I wouldn't take anything to heart what she says. As far as visiting you don't have to go every day but once or twice a month or every other month.

Here's the thing: You aren't going to change her. It's pretty much all downhill from here, for her. The ONLY thing you can change is how you react to it.

This is not the loving cuddly grandmother-who-baked-cookies-and-spoiled-you-rotten of your childhood fantasies. This is an old woman who is gradually losing her mental faculties. In her way, I suspect she does love you, and maybe she just never knew how to show it. She's not going to learn now.

Think "short visits" -- less than half an hour. Answer questions pleasantly, even if it's the 3rd or 4th time she asks in the same hour. Take the Little Debbie cake -- then go back in the kitchen and throw it away. If she makes a rude remark, just laugh and shrug it off. Really, it's not personal.
