I've been going to the same barbershop for about ten years. There used to be three barbers - the oldest is now 90, started the shop, and sold it to the now 67 year old barber several years back. The other man would be 80 now but passed away in 2015.

The 90 year old normally cuts my hair, but he's been out sick for a couple of weeks. He was there maybe a month ago. I went to get my hair cut earlier this week, and the 67 year old was calling the older man a hypochondriac and that he's always "sick with something" and that "if I was sick like this, he'd have done packed my stuff up and sent it to me"

At 90, I'm surprised the man is still able to work and in as good of shape as he is in. Him and his wife flew to Arizona by themselves to see the grandkids last year. He's able to drive and get himself around. His wife fell earlier this year and broke her hip, and she's requiring more assistance. They are just old.

I thought it was very rude for the barber to complain like this in front of customers. I've never noticed the older man complaining about his health. I'm thinking of not going back here unless I see the older man's truck.

Anyone find this very rude and unprofessional?

Yes, both. Rude and unprofessional.

Let's see how Barber 67 feels when he gets to 90. If he makes it.

Too bad he might have to wait that long to gain some compassion.

I don't find it rude and unprofessional. I can just picture this old school barbershop with a bunch of men sitting around gossiping, complaining about wives, bragging about kids and grandkids, talking about last night's game, etc. Totally appropriate for an old school barbershop.

Sounds like barber shop banter to me. I'd probably have a good chuckle if I was a customer and not be offended or taken aback by chat like this. Most barbershops I have been to do this.

It's unprofessional to air dirty laundry in front of customers. But it's going to happen because it's a barbershop.

There's likely growing resentment if the 90 y/o calls out sick a lot and the 67 y/o is frequently left scrambling to pick up the slack. He can't let him go for health reasons, and it's possible that he can't afford to hire someone else because he's already paying the 90 y/o.

Compassion is all fine and good, but the man is trying to run a business. The actions of the 90 y/o directly impact his livelihood. Sounds like the 90 y/o needs to start giving some thought to whether retiring would be a good idea.

Yep, sounds like harmless barber shop "shtick" to me. Good-natured ribbing is part of the show.

The dude is 90!!! Of course he's gonna be sick and have health issues. I feel like a person who is 67 (which aint exactly young either) should understand this.

Very rude and just stupid IMO.

Then perhaps committing himself to a job where someone is dependent upon him being there isn't the best idea anymore.

I agree that Barber 90 should consider hanging up his clippers. But Barber 67, now the owner of the establishment, needs to handle it privately with his longtime coworker.

Somehow, I doubt this joint has such a traffic jam of gossip-loving clientele that they're backing up out of the cattle chute waiting to be "part of the show." It doesn't sound "good-natured." It's mean and tacky.

But then, I'm the wrong gender to be admitted to this boy's den anyway. I don't hang out at the "beauty parlor" either, but I'd have the same opinion of a woman doing this.

Sounded harmless to me as well but I think some people just look for things to complain about lol
