Of course, now there are PODS; you can keep them in your yard for however long, moving things in and out of them (both at the old and new locations), plus calling someone to move it between the two. However, that's also a form of storage unit, albeit a guaranteed temporary one.
I have a "storage room"/office at my condo that I keep some things in. While some may view it as an inefficient use of space, I can guarantee you that the room would be empty if I didn't use it for what I did.
I guess it beats renting a storage unit at a facility. I just don't understand the purpose behind this of people who store boxes full of stuff which most will probably just be left there collecting dust and cow webs. I have friend who lives in a small home and has a room so cluttered with boxes of junk that most hasn't been touched since he had moved in there years ago.
I think if I lived in a small house, I would make the most of it with the little space I have. Of course somethings belong in storage or in a shed outside. I would think maybe something deeper is going on if someone thinks it's okay to have a room stuffed full of boxes of stuff
Unless you are paying the house note and associated bills, I wouldn't worry about it

in my family, yes. and the basement and the attic and other rooms. Don't see it in other homes though.
The spare room is the house equivalent of the "junk drawer," and everyone needs one of those!
