First of all, he's assuming I want a drink (and no, being in a bar doesn't automatically mean I want an alcoholic beverage. Perhpas I'm looking for someplace quiet and just want a soda or iced tea), and he assumes I'm going to like whatever drink he chooses. Men often assume that women like fruity, sugary drinks ... I'd rather have a bourbon neat.

Whenever I (as a bartender) was asked to send a drink, it was always whatever the customer was drinking. I literally never just sent a randomly selected drink from a random person, that would be weird.

Leave it to the recipient and they might order "a bottle of your most expensive wine."

Absolutely not. I drink in public myself, and don't consider myself a jerk.

I didn't say automatic, I said 'good chance'
Don't get hung up on that though... the final determination on whether or not a guy is a jerk is not based on the drink offer, it's based on how they react to rejection, which is really the subject of the thread.

I wonder why people still do this with so much on the news about drugging drinks and date rape.
Sometimes the bartenders are in on spiking the drink. It's a problem here in Vegas.

Not only is a drink from a stranger a safety concern, I just always feel very uncomfortable when this happens. I travel a lot and am often going through work notes when I'm sitting at a bar. I'm happily coupled and not entertaining new relationship options. But I don't want to be rude.
"No thank you!", smile, go back to what you were doing.

Agree, it's been a long while but it was always "the gentleman would like to buy you another of whatever you're having"
