I haven't had a hair cut in over a year. I'm trying to grow my hair out.

It is really starting to look long now.

I also been noticing some strange looks from people.

Yes, it is 2008 but I still think there is a small taboo about a guy with long hair.

I have long hair, a gotee beard and around 40.

Maybe the whole package looks odd.

I have a good job, make really good money, yet I'm instanly put into a box.

My question is "Do people's perceptions of you matter"

If Mrs. Chow likes it and your boss isn't gonna kick ya out, it's all good!

Not to brag but my boss wouldn't have the stones to kick me out.

Mrs. Chow has nagged my for years to grow it out.

When we first me I had long hair.

I think the most important thing is "are you comfortable with yourself"? If you are then don't worry about what other people think. I used to worry more about what people thought when I was younger now I just don't care. I am who I am and if you don't like me that's fine.

The only time I might fit the norm is if it affected my job. If I might get fired b/c of my appearance and I needed the job I would change.

Very true.

I guess I'm thinking about the larger question of conformity.

I don't give a poo about what people think anymore.

Once you start paying my bills then you get a say.....

It depends on the line of work you are in. In my line of work we are expected to look and dress a certain way. But if your job isn't in danger, your wife wants you to grow your hair and you are happy with yourself, why not just do what you've been doing? I allow my son to have his hair any way he wants it - despite my MIL and the rest of the fuddy-duddies b*tching about his long hair.

I personally think long hair on a guy can be sexy, as long as he keeps it clean! But, that is an aside! The way I see life, some people are going to like me and some people are not. I can't help that. I can polite, fun, caring, sweet, etc. and treat people the way I want to be treated, but still there will be people that just don't like me (sad) and I don't really care. I'm more of an introvert anyway.

Do the right thing, be a person of character, have fun and don't worry about the idiots that don't like ya, their loss. That is my theory.

Good theory.

I wished more people adhered to that theory.
