I think it depends on the environment they grew up in. My teen was an only child until he was 9 yrs old, so he spent a lot of time with my husband and me. He was very used to relating to adults. In fact, our friends took him on a trip to Hawaii with their kids when they were all 9 and 10 yrs old. They said he felt more comfortable with the adults than with the other children. Sometimes I regret not forcing him to spend time with other kids his age.
Anyway, as a result, his conversation skills have always been better than most adults I know. When we have people over, he engages them very smoothly. "How is your job going?" "I like basketball. Did you play sports when you were in high school?"
I do think many adults 'talk down' to kids and teenagers. If this happens to them enough, they get a cynical attitude toward all adults.
