You need to put yourself 1st.
If this were somebody she was close to, it probably wouldn't even be a question for her either, KWIM?

Don't go. You're worried about supporting your family? What about your family supporting you? Transiting 1600 miles each way when you don't want to, well... That's one advantage of being an adult. You really don't have to do things that you might not want to anymore. Send them a gift and a good wishes from TX.

I agree with going to the run. You don't even know the bride and IF your Mom really wants to go to the wedding, she WILL go. If you give into Mom's guilt trip, you are opening up another whole can of worms for your future. (more guilt trips because they work on you)

Go to the marathon. A change in her plans doesn't mean a change in the world's. I don't know how it was years ago before my existance, but it seems like there are so many commitments now. Especially on weekends. Sometimes you have to decline (even family- don't let them throw that guilt trip on you.) if that's the only way to have some 'you' time. Like you said, you are going to visit them at another time. Keep your word and go. As for moms, she should get over it.

And depending on the person, I hate if they ask me "why" or "what are my previous plans" if I tell them I'm not going to be able to make it. It's really none of your business.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the support. I will go visit at another time, and I will send a nice gift, but finishing this run is something I want to do for myself (for once).
