Well I just think even though we apparently have more freedom, society has become a far too big and controlling machine that will dictate much of people's lives. Most of the time, for the worse. And one person can't fight against a system made up of millions. You may say it's possible but that doesn't go beyond a theory.
Personally, I make no attempt to rescue "millions" from their own system. I concentrate on the one person that most controls my choices....me.
I wake up each day determined to defend my rights without trampling on the rights of others. I also make it a goal, each and every day, to find something that amuses me or puts a smile on my face. Albeit, some days are more challenging than others.
However, when the "system" becomes more onerous than I can tolerate, I find solace in re-reading the poem Invictus. Therefore, from personal experience, I can attest that the implementation of this philosophy does "go beyond a theory".
There's nothing wrong with being a realist, although sometimes that scares the Hell out of a vapid moron, and they say, "Ooh, y'all is bein' so negative! Why is y'all like thayat??"
Because it's a big, dirty, mean world. Pull your head out and live. This ain't negative. There is happiness, but it's not found in vapidity.

Did anyone say there is something wrong with being a realist? Everything I have read states the opposite...
People who are called negative are usually much more down to earth and in touch with reality. There is indeed much more bad things in the world than good things, which makes the so called optimistics to live in a unrealistic, artificial world.
but it's not good for a person's mental health. why spend a finite life being unhappy? it doesn't make much sense.
