I am close with most of my family but everyone rings the bell or knocks on the door...I always keep it locked but they would make me aware of their presence even if I didn't...
We tell each other we love them on the phone, in email, in cards, etc.
I do both pop-ins and set times. I'm close to my family but I realize that they all have other things going on in their lives besides waiting for me to pop by. lol. A courtsy phone call before knocking on someones door, or just opening it, is always a good idea. Since I'm sitting here in my robe, freshly out of the shower at 3pm, I know I would appreciate it
My parents were sorta cool about showing affection, I'm trying to be better as an adult. My Dad has taken to saying "Love you" at the end of our phones calls.
I'm very close to my family, except for the woman formerly known as my sister. It is because I honor family so much that I had to cut her out. She's an abhorrent, evil human being.

Mrs. Chow has a SIL that is a major, major, major douchebag.
Very close. Always knock first, but parents house is an exception. In the summer if it's during the day, the garage door is open, and I would normally walk in and say hello. However, it's rare that I would come over without calling first. Of course I have a key, but that is for when I'm checking on the house for them. Generally, Always end phono conv with I love you.
Always hug...always, when leaving.
