You might want to give Weldon NC a try. Located in Halifax Co., Weldon's a nice little town just off of interstate 95 south of the VA border, with a little downtown area & parkland along the Roanoke River. Low crime rate & affordable housing too. Population is listed as better than 60% colored folk, which sounds like it's right up your alley. Good luck!

I'm not sure about the local kinds of neighborhoods with corner store and such, but I have an AA friend, a teacher at the high school, 2 sons - one off to college this year - in High Point, NC. They all really love it there.

Thanks, siyaa.

For what it's worth, I looked at the High Point profile. According to city-data.com, the crime rate seems to be a little higher than the national average. Who knows if the data is accurate, but it seems like a risk I might not want to take (as opposed to 20 years ago when I was in my early 20's and that wouldn't have bothered me).

I know; middle-aged folks and their complainin'.

My wife and I moved to the Greensboro area in 2005, and we love it here. Convenient to Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Raleigh, the mountains and beaches, it is kind of right in the middle of everything. The Piedmont Triad area is very desireable with lots of new homes sprouting up all over the place. Three of my neighbors are from NJ. It doesn't surprise me! Tons of Jersyans are here already. I know a lot of them are settling in the Charlotte area.

I heard Greensboro is very nice as well, but I'm not sure how the job market is over there? Do you know if there are a lot of technology companies, just the Raleigh area has?

Job market is good in the Triad area (W-Salem, Greensboro, High Point) Dell computers just opened a manufacturing facility in Winston Salem recently. My wife got a job for a pharmaceutical company in Greensboro and works out of the house. Can't beat that!!!
