Wilmington is known as a tourist destination but it also the home of a University, it's also a film industry center (NC is the third largest, behind NY and CA b/c of Wilmington.), it's a medical center, an R & D hub, and home of one of only 2 state ports. The largest one at that.

Wilmington's MSA consits of 3 counties. New Hanover, Pender and Brunswick. Cape Fear (region) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jacksonville's MSA consists solely of Onslow County. Jacksonville, North Carolina metropolitan area - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adding Onslow to WIlmington's MSA would increase it's population by about 50% in one fell swoop. Also, the same RAC that is bring increases to Fayettevlle is bring them to Jacksonville. The Marine Corps has gotten larger by over 20K in the past couple of years with alot of those new Marines landing in Jacksonville. Onslow already has on of the lowest unemployment rates in the state. Speaking of unemployment , Wilmington's is lowersthan Fayettville's as well.

I didn't know that Jacksonville and Wilmington were that close, as I've never had the pleasure of venturing over to that part of the state. It's only a matter of time until those two metros connect. Jacksonville's local economy is definitely getting a boost right now due to the heavy military presence there which is why it's been ranking pretty favorably lately among areas doing relatively well economically.

I know that Jacksonville and Greenville are that close. So it looks like Greenville, Jacksonville, annd Wilmington could be Coastal Plain Crescent.

Close enough for Marines to go 'trolling for college girls on the weekend, but it's about 1.5 hours away while Wilmington is about one. I think the biggest barrier to the areas feeling connected though is the Croatan national forest.

I feel Greenville's MSA ( Greenville, North Carolina metropolitan area - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) , which is currently only Pitt and Greene County, will grow to include Craven, Beaufort, Carteret, Lenoir and Jones County. It could include Wayne as well or Wayne will eventually become part of the Triangle.

I think Wilmington's will be New Hanover, Pender, Brunswick, and Onslow with several toss-up counties. Duplin, Sampson, Bladen, and Columbus may end up as part of Wilmington or Fayeteville.

Fayettevile's MSA ( Fayetteville, North Carolina metropolitan area - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) is currently only Cumberland and Hoke. I think it may grow to include the toss-ups I mentioned above and Moore, Harnett, Lee, Robeson, and Scotland.
