I live in central Texas and am looking to move to the mountains of NC, VA, TN, or WV. I just can't decide yet where but plan a trip to the areas next summer. I'm looking for cooler summers, little snow, and less tornadoes.

I understand what you mean! I live in Houston. We have thought for years we would move to the mountains of N.C. we LOVE it so much but now that I've been reading about the taxes we're thinking maybe eastern Tenn. We would still be close enough to N.C. I have also been to VA and WV and they are all beautiful and I think any of those places is better than Texas.

Our family is looking to move in 2008-2009 from the Central Texas area. Taxes are going thru the roof. Received our property taxes a few days ago, and they have almost doubled! Our school district is looking to pass an 87 million, not a typo, 87 million school bond package in tomorrow's elections. Will not miss the heat and humidity either. Know NC has them also, was there a couple of years ago in July--was very pleasant.

Glad to see there are others from Texas moving out this way. After living in NC for a year, it is great. You do have 4 seasons. Right now all the leaves are changing and it is beautiful with the different colors. Yes it does get hot here. BUT, you know when it starts. Around late July and early August it will get hot, at least in the Raleigh or eastern NC area. The extreme heat doesnt last long in this area, and it cools off at night. Nothing compared to Texas. From where I'm from near Houston, you dont know when the heat will start. It could be March or April and could last till Oct and be muggy every day. I've seen in Texas some years where we wore shorts on Christmas day and I've seen it snow Christmas Eve (2004). I prefer it to be cold or cool for Christmas. It feels like Christmas when it is. You get it here. One thing that is hard to find is good Texas brisket. Luckily my smoker pit came with us, and I have intoduced some native North Carolinians (next door neighbors) to some good Texas brisket and Texas cookin'. They cant get enough of it. They love it. Now if I could get some good cajun food.. ooh yea!!!

I understand, the heat is a big part of why we want to move!! We really missed not being there this fall, I heard it was beautiful. And yes I know all too well about wearing shorts on Christmas with the AC on when you wish it was the fireplace you could turn on We want to live in western N.C. near the mountains. Tomorrow it's supposed to be 85 here, bet you don't miss that! How long have you been there? Was it difficult to move such a long distance? I'd love to hear more about it.

Redrover,
I am a native Texan, grew up there, and loved it. I still do. I moved to the Triangle through marriage. I've lived in Chapel Hill and Cary. Both towns are completely different. I love Texas and my entire family still lives there-my parents in Plano and my sister in San Antonio. I spent summers on the East Coast and always liked it. North Carolina is very East Coast and also a little bit southern. What's your preference?
In Texas everything is big..
In North Carolina education and quality of life are more important..
In North Carolina we have four seasons-winter,spring,summer, and fall.
In Texas, you have winter and summer...
In Texas you have great shopping...
In North Carolina you don't...
In North Carolina you have quick and easy access to the beach and the mountains........with a drive of course...
In Texas you don't..
In Texas you have big hair..
In North Carolina you don't.......
3 Great Universities, great basketball in the Triangle..
In Dallas, you have the Dallas Cowboys......boy do I miss them.
In Texas you have beef barbecue,
In North Carolina you have vinegar based pork barbecue..
Differences aside, the quality of life here is fantastic..PM me and I'll call you back and let you know even more if you'd like..

I lived outside of San Antonio for a few years and LOVED it there. If my entire family wasn't in NC, I could have been happy to stay there. But being born and raised a Carolina girl, I was happy to come home.

My family is relocating to the triangle area from West Texas in the next few months due to a job change for my husband. I have lived in Texas all my life, and although I have traveled outside of the state, I have never lived outside of it. I am very nervous about it. Here in Texas our quality of life is good, and I have never lived anywhere else. I am up for the challenge, and mostly because I haven't really read anything negative about NC.
I live in a town of 100K, and make 80K+ per year. My house was 107K, and it is 2050 sq ft. Am I being over optimistic that I can find that kind of a job in NC? We are going to rent until we know if the company will keep us there and if we are going to like it. As far as climate, I feel certain the scenery of NC will be better. I will enjoy having true seasons and seeing snow, but I just hope this move is the best thing for us. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

RobBob - What kind of work do you do? You said you were being relocated to the Triangle - are you in a technology field? Finding the work shouldn't be hard, but finding a 2000 sq ft house for that price may be! If you like small town living, we have some great towns surrounding the major Raleigh areas with more affordable housing. If you'd like, pm me for more specifics and I can show you a sample of what's available. This is a beautiful area, and NC has so much to offer - best of luck with your transition, and if you need any help, let me know!
