Default New England type town in NC???

I am looking for a nice "New England" style town in NC... something with charm and character... that would be suitable for semi-retirement. We would like something that has some cultural activities so that we don't get bored. I have heard nice things about Pinehurst. Any info on that area or other suggestions would be appreciated.

The Southern Pines/Pinehurst is very nice. It's on the border or the NC piedmont and sandhills. New Bern is near the coast and is very nice as well. VERY historic town and beautiful.

Mphblues is on a distinguished road
I grew up in Philly and traveled up into New England a lot, I love the area I live in now but if I were looking for a New England Type town I'd look more in the western part of NC. Waynesville or even Boone. They remind me of some of the smaller quaint towns in the north. now of course NC has a coast so coastal towns are a lot alike anywhere you go. NC has one of the nicest coasts I've ever been to. Lots of fishing and sea food too.

Somebody has to say it so I will...if you want a New England-type town, why not look in New England? This is North Carolina. NOT New England. And it will not change for you.

I agree with Southlander.

I lived in NC for 12 years at both ends of the State. Since living in NYC, we have traveled up and down New England. Two different worlds.
My advice?
Buy a place in New England, and go to Florida for 3 months during the Winter.

Right... that is why I said New England TYPE of town. You know... charming and with character. I bet there are some in NC that wouldn't have to change for me to qualify as charming!

Edenton, North Carolina - it will definitely remind you of the quaint small coastal towns of New England.
