Default Just moved to NC. Any suggestions for finding a reasonable home near RTP?

My husband and I just moved to North Carolina. We're lucky in that we managed to sell our home in Maplewood, New Jersey relatively fast. We work near the RTP and would like to stay in the area (like the commute). We don't want to spend more than $300-315K on the new home. A lot of the homes in near the RTP are out of our price range. Any suggestions for areas where we can find a home in our price range? How about Southwest Durham? Are there areas that are more culturally diverse than others?
