I am planning on moving to NC and have done some research on the larger cities. I am going to visit sometime in the next few months, and wondered if anyone may have some suggestions of towns I may appreciate that are not typically known by those outside the area. I know I can't have everything, but here is what I am interested in:

Ideally, I would like to be about an hour or less from a city that has an active art scene or film/tv production areas, and maybe 2 hours from a part of the coast where I could surf. I prefer areas that have a sense of community and that have all different ages of people (I just graduated from college and want to get out of areas that are only a "college town'). I also love to be outdoors and active so places that have parks or trails and things would be awesome.

Any suggestions of areas I could visit would be greatly appreciated!

By far, Wilmington is the first city that comes to my mind from what you've said.
Film studios are there...art scene in the downtown area...and half hour from beach.
