Actually, Hickory is bounded on the northern side by the Lake Hickory of the Catawba River. There are many residential developments (with slips, docks, or put-ins) on the Burke (Hickory) side of the lake and the Caldwell county (Hudson... think of Lenoir) or Alexander county (Bethlehem ... think north Hickory) sides.
Of course, Lake Norman starts on the northeastern side of Hickory. Additionally, you have Lake Rhodhiss, slightly west of Hickory (Rutherford College/ Cajah's Mountain.)

Hickory is a great small city. The southeast part of the city is growing and is mainly retail/entertainment. The northern parts of the city hold most of the residential areas.
The southwest part of city, where Hwy 321 and Hwy 70 intersect, is dying. Most businesses are relocating to the growing southeast area.

I didn't think so...someone replied to me on another thread and said I would never find a 3 bedroom house for $1100 or under (rent) in the Hickory area...they said that Hickory is the most expensive area of NC.
We were just there last week and I had a hard time finding rentals for any amount, but the ones I saw were way UNDER $1100/month.
