Hickory, NC
I've lived most of my life in Long Island, NY, and am looking to relocate to NC for a simpler life. southern hospitality and a family-friendly environment.
Can I get some views on the areas around Hickory, Granite Falls, Lenoir... I have two daughters in high school. I imagine the job prospects may be tight in those immediate areas, leaving the options of commuting to Charlotte or Winston-Salem. What type of "downtown" areas do these towns have? Vacant storefronts? Some cafes? Any small bodies of water closer than Lake Norman to these areas? Are there any sailboats on any of the area lakes, or is it mainly motorboats? Any comments on the weather are also welcome. Thank you kindly for any info.

Lake James State Park is around 50 miles from Hickory.

well after re-thinking this yuou maybe correct. I forgot about the 321 route. I was going I-40 to 77.
