Default Hickory, NC

I've lived most of my life in Long Island, NY, and am looking to relocate to NC for a simpler life. southern hospitality and a family-friendly environment.

Can I get some views on the areas around Hickory, Granite Falls, Lenoir... I have two daughters in high school. I imagine the job prospects may be tight in those immediate areas, leaving the options of commuting to Charlotte or Winston-Salem. What type of "downtown" areas do these towns have? Vacant storefronts? Some cafes? Any small bodies of water closer than Lake Norman to these areas? Are there any sailboats on any of the area lakes, or is it mainly motorboats? Any comments on the weather are also welcome.

Thank you kindly for any info.

Lake James State Park is around 50 miles from Hickory.

Lake James - Power boats, sailboats and smaller craft have ample room to enjoy the water.

It only takes me 1 hour if there is not any slow traffic backups. I can be in Asheville from the airport in 2 hours without traffic.
