Cool Asheville or Wilmington

I'm a young (single) professional looking to relocate to (possibly) NC around this time next year. I already know -- good luck finding a job, get a job first, etc. But, I'm planning on moving somewhere out of state (from OH), and NC is one of the places I'll be sending resumes. I'm assuming that one of these two cities will fit me better than the other, and wondering if anyone has any input on which one that would be, just to kind of focus my efforts a little.

I'm definitely, definitely outdoorsy. I am a pretty serious runner, love hiking, kayaking, surfing, etc. Especially with my dog. I'm a an animal lover, and vegetarian. I love cultural things - anything art related, and live music is a must. Temperatures don't bother me - heat, humidity...bring it on. I'm pretty much over the snow, living in NE Ohio, but am fine with cold. I am single, and would like to not stay that way for the rest of my life - so I'd like to be around others like me. I love little coffee shops, cafes, farmers markets - things to do that maybe are walkable?

If anyone has any suggestions, they're greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Wilmington is like a Beach city. And I don't know much about Asheville, but I've heard it's pretty outdoorsy. But, don't take my word for it.

It's very outdoorsy and meets most of your needs except for the no snow and surfing. Asheville is more liberal, lots of hiking, cafe's, farmers market, vegetarian options, etc. So I would say Asheville, but you need to visit both and decide if you would prefer the mountains or beach.

You've picked the two extremes of the state, I assume you realize. Both are known for recreation (of quite opposite sorts), but if snow is your anathema, Wilmington gets very little while Asheville gets it reliably (it is in the mountains, after all). Of course, Wilmington gets the occasional tropical storm. I think Asheville would be more vegetarian-friendly.

Really, for two such opposite places, there's no real way anyone here and make your choice for you; you'll need to visit both and compare what each offers your needs.

I really appreciate the responses! Obviously, I realize how different the two cities are. And, I love both mountains and the ocean equally, and the subsequent activities they offer. As far as snow goes, where I live now, we average around 75" per year... so Asheville's 16" sounds like heaven! I was just sort of wondering which city I might fit in better. It seems my answer is exactly what I thought -- I'd equally enjoy both. I'm looking forward to researching these cities more! I can't wait to move!
