As for Catawba county, I will tell you this - you would probably need to contact school district itself, and ask for the EC dept (Exceptional Children), and see if (and how) they are familiar with your type of situation. The reason I bring this up is that I know people who teach spec. ed. in the general area, and these particular individuals are not all that knowledgeable about ASD's. It is not for lack of initial training, but because there are so, so many reasons children receive spec. ed., it is hard to be an expert on them all. So, by default, they are more knowledgeable in areas where they currently have students.

Now, that being said, I will tell you what one of them told me. If they are to teach a child with an ASD, and they are not trained, well, they can and should be sent for training. Long story short, they can and do get training they need to effectively teach in the classroom. However, if you are looking for people already experienced, you should probably contact the school first to see.

I have a child with Asperger's, and am also looking to move to be closer to family because of the support. I have heard of great resources in NJ (the YALE school, for instance), but can't afford to move there if I wanted to. I called Cabarrus County before the schools were out for the year, and found them very helpful and approachable. In many ways, I still feel in the dark, and don't know what the year will hold, but at least I made some contacts and have a feel for what to expect.

Anyway, sorry this is rambling on. Hope this helped a little.

Best wishes.

As you stated, contacting the EC department of the county you're interested in should always be the first step in discerning the level of accomodations that will be made available.

Thanks for mentioning Carrabus County too. I had forgotten but aside from UC, that is the other county I heard good things about when it comes to EC.

Hi Sara,

Glad to hear that about Cabarrus County! I was pleased with the people I spoke with, but hadn't heard of their reputation, other than academics.

We've spent the past several years "educating the educators" about Asperger's in our child's elementary school (where we are moving from), so it was a relief to finally speak with people who not only heard of AS, but had suggestions on schools with experience with it!

Default Autism Society

You may want to check on the Autism Society of NC. They offer great Parent Advocacy services and have offices across the state. I worked for them for two years and know they are truly there for the right reasons.

Their website address is AutismSociety-nc.org.
