GOOD, that's great news.

While you are studying voting patterns you may want to check out a history and geography book: Californians are niether Yankees nor were involved in the Civil War.

Durham and Orange Counties are overwhelmingly liberal while Guilford, Mecklenburg, and Wake Counties are moderate/leaning slightly liberal.
All of NC's urban areas will be solidly liberal 15 years from now, and it won't be solely because of migration from other states. Many of the young people in NC hold liberal views contrary to their parents' views as a result of increasing educational attainment and changing values.
NC as a state also tends to be somewhat more liberal and progressive than Virginia, having better consumer protection laws and regulatory agencies, as well as slightly more freedom on issues like abortion. Virginia is in the dark ages thanks to a state legislature controlled by rural good ole' boys.

North Carolina is ultra conservative. If you are talking about politics, North Carolina has a very diverse two party system, but Democrats here are conservative also. I live in a county that was the birthplace of Andrew Jackson and Jesse Helms. The encyclopedia will tell you that Andrew Jackson was born in South Carolina, but the person who delivered him said he was born in North Carolina. We don't argue about it, we just have fun with it.
When my children were in school the first game of the school year took place the Friday before school started. It was a football game with special rules between the high schools in Lancaster County, SC and Union County, NC. The county that won the ball game got to claim Andrew Jackson for the year. North Carolina won the first year and I think South Carolina won every game after that. From North Carolina's point of view, maybe we should have been playing basketball.

I am a great admirer of Jesse Helms. He helped us when we moved down here 10 years ago while having problems with our long distance moving company. He was a great man.
I consider myself to be a slightly to the right conservative but it has nothing to do with political party...just my way of seeing things.
John Edwards, our Democrat Presidential Candidate hopeful is more conservative than most Republicans (at least from where I sit).
Never heard the thing about Andrew Jackson...but I will have to query my neighbors about it

I remember when Jesse Helms was a Democrat, but I worked in the public information field and we were not allowed to just give information we knew; we had to give the source. The source for this information is above. I remember his editorials on WRAL. It amuses me when I hear that North Carolina is getting more blue. It could not be more wrong. North Carolina was blue for years. It is now becoming more red.
I agree with your John Edwards opinion.

No problem Sunny
Here is what I said again regarding Jesse Helms:
Some of you here may not have been old enough to be taxpayers back in the days that NC was continuing to send Jesse Helms to the senate election after election. If you weren't, you probably don't remember what I remember about why we voted for him time after time, and are instead relying on misrepresentations of him in the liberal media to form a view of him.
Had you been old enough to be a taxpayer you may have felt differently than you do now. The liberal media regularly slandered Jesse Helms. Actually, worse than just slander him, they conducted full out smear campaigns at every opportunity.
In the end, it doesn't really matter, the truth of what he accomplished in his time in office is there for all who take the time to study our recent history. In case you don't, I'll just leave you with this - Jesse Helms was a man who believed in a strong national defense and in standing up to the dictators in this world, he vehemently opposed increases in federal spending and believed less government was better, he was a champion of humanitarian efforts, a great friend to the farmers of this nation and was widely respected by the people in the senate who knew him best. In fact, he was especially known for his ability to be bipartisan in his friendships and worked to bring people of different parties together.
These are just the things I remember about him personally. I am sure I am leaving many of his accomplishments out - but again, I'm sure if you take the time you can read about them yourself, IF you can get past the garbage the liberal media at the time printed about him.
